What a magnificent town. We stayed in the old city for two nights at the Sunshine hotel, it was a beautiful stay for $25/night! The first day we rented a scooter and explored the surrounding area. The second day we borrowed bicycles from our hotel and toured around the city. The town is situated on two sides of a river. The river fluctuates with the tide. There are thousands of lanterns lighting the streets as well as bars, restaurants and tailors galore. It's a lively touristy destination filled with vendors trying to sell you everything from clothes, food, boos, fruit and good luck" candles you can light and float down the river. If you go off the beaten track a couple blocks you can eat with the locals and spend half the price, but you have no idea what you're eating at times. Eddies braver than I. Lots of the architecture here is several hundred years old, so Hoi An has an abundance of character and still maintains its Vietnamese feel even though its over run by tourists. It's a quaint town worth a two or three day visit.
